Importance Of Dining In A Halal Restaurant
A lot of us have seen the word “halal” on food labels and eateries, but not all of us know what it really means. Our Muslim pals base their selection on this word because it indicates what is allowed for them to buy or eat. For a country that has citizens with mixed religious affiliations, that term is just as critical.
Muslims in Islamic countries don’t have problems eating in halal restaurants and picking up halal items as most likely than not, they are halal-certified. But for those who are in countries that have various religious groups, halal is not as rampant as they would like. Good thing that more establishments are now becoming aware of their customer’s preferences.
Halal means lawful or legal. If a food tag has this word on or a restaurant claims they are halal-certified, it means that the preparation of their products is in accordance with the Islamic dietary law, and thus, they are allowed to consume the items.
So what is allowed in Islamic law? There are a number of guidelines, but let’s begin with how a meat should be prepared. An animal should be butchered by cutting its windpipe and gullet quickly. This method of ritual slaughter is believed to kill instantaneously and painlessly.
If halal means legal, haraam is the reverse. Muslims are not allowed to have haraam foods, such as alcohol and pork. A halal-certified restaurant and a halal-approved food item should not contain such ingredients. Also, they should be careful withhow they make the food, avoiding any contamination. If a spoon was already used for a meal with haraam ingredients, it should not be used anymore to prepare halal-approved meals.
Other forbidden items include blood, carnivores or birds of prey, animals butchered in the name of any other god but Allah or have been committed to another god, and corpse of an animal.
Halal-certified eateries should conform to the Islamic dietary laws. And because some items are difficult to determine whether they are halal or not, there are Muslim groups who certify food products as halal for buyers. Those products with halal certification are used as ingredients by halal eateries, just to make very certain that they are carefully observing the laws.
It’s good to know that there are eateries not run by Muslims that still make a great effort to adhere to Islamic dietary laws. It just means that they value all their clients and respect their orientations and religious beliefs.
